The Speak2Me app will identify a spoken language, from a short 3 to 8 second voice sample. The AI model at the heart of Speak2Me will accurately identify any of the 30 most spoken non-english languages used in Australia.
Without knowing which language is spoken, effective, meaningful communication is not possible.
The app is designed to operate on an internet-independent Android tablet.
Once a language is identified, Speak2Me provides a Communication Module (CM) which is a means of basic communication with non-English speaking people.
The CM contains a selection of written passages (statements of reassurance and general information, instructions and Yes/No questions) pertinent to a specific incident. The current version of Speak2Me provides CM's for Road Crash Rescue and Evacuation Centre Registration.
The passages comprising the CM's have been translated, by registered translators, into each of the designated 30 languages which Speak2Me is designed to identify. Translated scripts, read aloud by registered translators, were recorded. Recordings are incorporated into the app. When an operator selects a written passage, the non-English speaking person for whom the app has been developed, will hear the selected passage spoken in their language.
The translations and recordings would not have been possible without the generous support of the National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters (NAATI).
Speak2Me provides a means of communicating with members of our CALD communities during what otherwise could be a very isolating experiences.
